Subscribing to Oxford's two major student newspapers
The JCR notes that...
I. University College JCR does not, at present, maintain an active subscription to Oxford's two weekly newspapers, the Cherwell or the Oxford Student.
II. These newspapers are often useful sources of information about ongoing events, societies and upcoming opportunities, and are important to the civic culture of the student body.
III. Univ JCR is a rarity amongst Oxford colleges for its lack of subscription to any student paper, and that this affects newspaper engagement with the student body of Univ.
The JCR believes that...
I. It would be good for Univ JCR members to have access to both the Cherwell and the Oxford Student, to read and make the most of the opportunities within.
II. That only a limited number of copies would presently need to be acquired, due to the shared nature of the JCR as a space and the cost of buying large numbers of each edition.
III. That buying a subscription to both newspapers, rather than just the Cherwell or the Oxford Student, would be of great value
The JCR proposes that...
I. An initial sum of £20 be put aside for the purchase of 5 copies of each biweekly print of the Oxford Student newspaper - for a total number of 20 papers over the course of the term.
II. A further sum of £20-25 be put aside for the purchase of 5 copies of each print of the Cherwell newspaper, persuant to later discussions with Oxford Student Publications Limited and the Cherwell as to the logistics of a subscription.
III. That these papers will be left out in the JCR for members to use, and left there after individual use for further reading.
